Top 5 tips to get your child to read

Fonics App Learn to Read Blog - 5 Tips to get your child to Read

Unless a child loves reading and can read, it can be tricky to get them to want to read. I have found that these five tips help tremendously with my Year 1 class.

Tip 1.

The book they are reading needs to be age/level appropriate, there is no point giving them a super hard book and expecting a miracle. But just as importantly, do not discourage them from a trickier book if they are interested in it.

Tip 2.

Which leads me to point number two, make sure the book is INTERESTING! I am certainly not going to read a book if I don’t think I am going to enjoy it and neither will they.

Tip 3.

Ask them about books they have read: What happened? How do you know? What is going to happen next? Questions that may encourage them to want to carry on reading.

Tip 4.

Read to them. There is no better way to get a child excited about stories and books than reading a story to them.

Tip 5.

Give them space, if they want to read independently then let them. This will encourage them to work out trickier words on their own and to use the skills they already have.

Hope this helps and let me know how you get on!
