Top 3 Physical Phonics Games for Children

Learning phonics through physical games can be great for children's gross motor skills and can contribute to their overall wellbeing. We have created a list of physical phonics games that can combine learning phonics, physical wellbeing and can be played at home or at school.

1. Find the Sound

Educational Aim:

  • To develop knowledge of grapheme-phoneme correspondences
  • To rehearse articulating the phoneme
  • To develop phonological awareness by generating words that begin with the target phoneme

What You Will Need:

  • Cones
  • Grapheme Flashcards
  • Children to be in partners

How to play:

An adult will need to hide the flashcards underneath the cones. Each child is to have a partner, their aim is to find two flashcards that have the same letter sound. They can either be the same letters making the sounds or alternate spelling combinations. Give children a time limit and switch partners around each round to challenge.

What You Will Need:

  • Grapheme Flashcards

How to Play:

Children are given a flashcard with a letter or digraph/trigraph on. They will need to find a partner that has a matching letter sound, remind them to say their sound to help find their partner. Once they have found their partner they will need to sit down. To add challenge you can use alternative spelling flashcards for example, the 'e' sound has more than one combination of letters that make it: ee,ea,e_e, this means some children might have to find a three.
